Simple Present (Easy Lesson)
The simple present tense is used for facts, habits, and routines. We use it to say what happens every day or usually.
1. When to use
- For habits: I walk to school every day.
- For facts: Water boils at 100°C.
- For routines: She gets up at 7 o'clock.
2. How to make the simple present
Subject + base verb (for I/you/we/they)
I play. / You work. / We study.
For he/she/it, add -s or -es to the verb.
He plays. / She watches. / It rains.
Notes:
- Verbs ending in -s, -x, -ch, -sh, -o add -es: go → goes, watch → watches.
- Verbs ending with a consonant + y change y → i + -es: study → studies.
3. Negative sentences
Use do not (don't) or does not (doesn't) + base verb.
I don't like coffee. / He doesn't play football.
4. Yes/No questions
Use Do or Does at the start.
Do you speak English? / Does she live here?
5. Wh- questions
Use a question word (what, where, when, why, how) + do/does + subject + base verb.
Where do you work? / What does he do?
